Unity 3D Guru Stephen and I have been beta testing the world’s first virtual reality game controller that is attached to a real shotgun. It is a different and brave new world in virtual reality, pilgrims. Some initial impressions:
- Shotguns are very heavy game controllers ! Gamers are used to holding controllers that weigh less than 10% the weight of an 8 pound trap gun – not a challenge. Holding a shotgun up-shouldered and swinging on a limitless supply of virtual reality targets is not easy. CLAZER can be set on continuous throw in Practice Mode – meaning the machine throws as soon as the previous clay has hit the ground. See how long you can hold the shotgun/ gun controller up for that . . .
- Putting a game controller on a shotgun teaches you the merits of starting from low gun position and calling Pull for each shot. See #1 above.
- Where you put your head really matters. DOH. Getting your head, the VR headset down on the stock correctly is the only way to have a good sight picture of the ramp, and that ramp/ bead is your (peripheral) visual reference provided you don’t look directly at it. Putting the controller on the shotgun makes that happen. Your head is where is supposed to be in relationship to the stock.
- A VR gun controller on a real gun is really realistic – you pick the real shotgun up, and up the “virtual gun” comes in the scene, you point it, you shoulder it, you go to low gun, you put it on the table and SHAZAAM the virtual gun does the same thing. Who would have ever thunk it ?
